Dash Assisted Reading (DaR)
Dash Assisted Reading (DaR) is a reading support method that temporarily breaks difficult words into smaller, readable chunks using dashes—helping readers decode the word in real time. The word is then shown in its normal form so the reader connects the pieces and builds confidence.

DAR is designed to:
- Reduce hesitation when encountering unfamiliar words
- Support decoding without interrupting the story
- Reinforce recognition through immediate repetition
How It Works
- A challenging word is briefly broken into parts using dashes
- The full word immediately follows
- The reader continues normally, with optional support if needed later
Example
With DAR:
Chris walks into the gym and feels un-com-for-ta-ble. Even though he felt uncomfortable he was happy to be there.
Without DAR:
Chris walks into the gym and feels uncomfortable.
Even though he felt uncomfortable he was happy to be there.
Why It Works
DAR gives the reader just enough support at the moment they need it, without slowing down the story or overwhelming them with rules. Over time, the brain begins to recognize these words instantly—making the support unnecessary.
