Excited toddler reaching for Johnny Needs Help book with mom and Professor ANT

What Age Should a Kid Get a Phone?

It’s not about age. It’s about self-control.

Parents ask this all the time, and most answers give a number: 10, 12, 14. But age isn’t the real question. A responsible 9-year-old may be more ready than a 13-year-old who can’t put a phone down.

The real question is: does your child have the self-control to handle it?

Safety and access are two different things

If your child is away from you, at school, a friend’s house or practice, a phone can help keep them safe. That’s a good reason to have one.

But a phone for safety is not the same as total access. You can give your child a phone and set clear limits on how it’s used.

Give the phone a home

Think of it like taking off your shoes when you come inside. Pick one spot in your house where phones go. When your child comes home, the phone goes in its place. When they leave, they pick it up.

It’s simple, it becomes a habit, and it keeps the phone from taking over family time.

When phones are for fun, stay involved

When you use a phone to keep your child busy, point it to something worth their time, like educational sites and games that make them think. Decide what they can watch and for how long. And whenever you can, watch with them.

Coming soon from Professor ANT: a kids’ site where screen time becomes thinking time. Games and activities that get your child figuring things out, not just tapping. Stay tuned!

Freedom grows with responsibility

Start with clear limits. As your child shows more responsibility and self-control, you can loosen them. More trust means more freedom. If they struggle, the limits come back until they’re ready again.

That’s not punishment. It’s the same rule as everything else in growing up: freedom grows with the ability to handle it.

Screen time isn’t the problem

Screens aren’t evil. The problem is when they push out everything else, like playing, reading, building, being outside, and talking with family.

Make sure your child has plenty of interests away from the phone, and let that time balance out screen time.

Join them

Try to spend time with your child every day. Now and then, sit with them for a few minutes on the phone or computer and ask, “Show me what you like.” You’ll learn about their world, and they’ll learn that you care about it.

Your best defense starts early

Self-control doesn’t appear the day your child gets a phone. It’s built from the very first years, every time your child makes a choice and thinks about what happens next.

That’s exactly what the Needs Help! books do. Your child decides how characters like Johnny, Chloe and Mateo should handle everyday situations, and explains why. They practice good judgment long before anyone hands them a phone.

A child who has spent years practicing self-control is your best defense against technology overload.
